Nintendo Switch Online Service Annual Pricing Revealed

Little Nightmares Complete Edition Coming to Nintendo Switch on May 18

Online multiplayer hasn't always been the best aspect of Nintendo's consoles, but with the Switch, there have been signs that things might change for the better. Right now, save data is confined to the system memory of your Switch console.

That's about it for now, but between pricing, classic games and the ability to cloud save (yowza!), Nintendo appears to be taking its online game to another level. 3 and Donkey Kong. This also means you can log into any Switch device with your online account to it get up and running. Friends can even watch their friends play these single-player games online.

The answer to both of those questions is no and, as Jason Schreier of Kotaku reports, that's because "there are now no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems", as a Nintendo spokesperson told Kotaku after Schreier reached out to the company via email.

For one, Nintendo will be adding more NES games to the Switch's online service regularly, which now sounds like it's going to work sort of like Netflix and allow subscribers to have access to any game they like without any extra cost beyond the subscription price.

Nintendo's Online Service for Switch is planned to launch in September of this year. The addition of cloud saves is a very welcome addition, as all Switch save data is tied to the console, prohibiting owners from transferring their data between consoles even in cases where their console breaks.

And like Nintendo has said from the beginning, it is adapting all of these games to work online. Nintendo says it will share more details at a later date regarding what specific titles will require an online subscription to play online.

More importantly, the Switch Online membership will offer free games on a regular basis. So you'll be able to play classic NES titles with two-player online multiplayer support on your Nintendo Switch, either in mobile mode or TV mode. One month will cost $3.99 USD, three months costing $7.99 USD, and finally twelve months will be $19.99 USD. More details about this will be revealed before the launch.
