Pakistani authorities bar United States envoy involved in mishap from leaving country

Pakistan bars US diplomat from leaving

Pakistan and the United States had announced restrictions on diplomats after a USA embassy vehicle driven by Colonel Joseph Emanual Hall, defense and air attache of the U.S. embassy in Islamabad, killed a Pakistani motorcyclist in Islamabad on April 7. In fact it is the second time in the last couple of days that Pakistan has taken a bold and just stance on an issue with Washington.

Any way credit goes to the Federal Investigation Agency officials who foiled Col Joseph bid to leave the country and it must also be investigated as to why and for what goal the USA military plane was allowed to land at the airbase. Joseph Hall, the U.S. Embassy's military attaché in Pakistan, was prevented from leaving the country while U.S. officials were informed he could not leave until the accident was adjudicated.

The latest blow to relations came on Saturday, when Pakistani authorities banned a U.S. military attache from leaving as planned, Pakistan's The Nation and Express Tribune newspapers reported.

A U.S. Air Force C130 had landed at Pakistan's Nur Khan air base to bring Hall back to the United States, but was forced to leave without him, according to local reports.

Sources said that the USA diplomat wasn't present at the airbase but would reach there after being allowed to leave the country.

The issue has further strained ties between Pakistan and US.

Islamabad's high court, noting that Hall did not have full diplomatic immunity, had directed the government to decide whether to add his name to a travel ban list. But Washington has long believed it actually shelters the Taliban's leaders, and President Donald Trump has cut off military aid in an effort to pressure Pakistan.

The father of man killed in the accident, Idris Baig, said in a recent interview that Col. Hall must face justice in Pakistan and was satisfied to see the authorities had not let him leave the country.

"We are ready for agreement but on the condition of his arrest", he said, referring to Colonel Hall.

Separately, Pakistan's foreign ministry said it would apply travel restrictions to all US diplomatic staff similar to those applied by Washington, according to a notification sent to the US Embassy on Friday and obtained by Reuters.

'My son will never come back and we will consult with our relatives and village community before negotiating the agreement.
