China, Japan and South Korea Agree to Talk Things Through

Mike Pompeo

A concession of this magnitude was an important moment clearing the way for meaningful and substantive talks about a denuclearized North Korea; talks which are set to occur between President Trump and the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, next month.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that three Americans detained by North Korea are on their way home with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. South Korea, for its part, has struggled to balance its close economic ties with China and its reliance on the US security framework in the region, driven both by North Korea's nuclear program and an increasingly active Japanese military, all while juggling to preserve its autonomy. They will get private capital that comes in. "Very exciting!" he wrote on Twitter.

The Japanese side is demanding a meeting after the Trump-Kim talks partly because it seeks to quickly ascertain the content of Kim's remarks, which will serve as the basis of its decision whether to hold a Japan-North Korea summit meeting toward resolving the abduction issue.

A delegation from North Korea has arrived in China.

A second Cheong Wa Dae official said the call between Moon and Kim may still take place this week, before the South Korean leader visits Washington to discuss the potential outcome of the upcoming US-North Korea summit with his US counterpart.

Wang Sheng, a Korea expert at Jilin University, said the recent property boom means the city is getting ready to do business with its neighbor, possibly on a much larger scale than before.

"The conversations are professional", he said on "Fox News Sunday".

"This will be Americans coming in - private sector Americans, not the U.S. taxpayer - private sector Americans coming in to help build out the energy grid", he said. "We are just not briefing you about it", the official added.

North Korea said Saturday that all of the tunnels at the country's northeastern nuclear test site will be destroyed by explosion in less than two weeks, while observation and research facilities and ground-based guard units will also be removed. The JCPOA provided Iran relief from UN-imposed sanctions in return for curbing its uranium enrichment program and granting access to inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). "I think what the prospect for North Korea is to become a normal nation, to behave and interact with the rest of the world the way South Korea does".

He also described what it was like to meet Kim on "Face the Nation", saying the leader doesn't need notecards to tackle complex discussions.
