Apple now has 55 self-driving cars in California

Apple, Again, Grows Its California Self-driving Fleet, It Has the Second Biggest Fleet (Updated) - macReports

Apple has 55 vehicles out on the road driven by a total of 83 drivers, up from the 45 vehicle permits the company possessed in March. The vehicles are equipped with advanced LIDAR tools, along with several cameras to sense the entire driving environment. According to the DMV figure, Apple has bigger self-driving auto fleet in California than Waymo, Toyota, BMW and many more that has makes it the second largest fleet in the state. At this stage, Apple hasn't been authorized to test self-driving cars independent of human supervision; for that, the company will need to submit a separate permit to the DMV - something Waymo did last month. Next in the list followed by Tesla (39 vehicles), Drive.Ai (14 cars) and Zoox Inc (12 cars). That puts it four cars ahead of the latest figures we have for Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving vehicle division thought to be among the leaders in the sector. However, those numbers may be somewhat misleading, since other companies are testing their self-driving fleet in other parts of the U.S.as well.

In April 2017 NV reported that Apple received a license to test driverless cars on roads in California. The fact that it's adding more cars to its fleet suggests that this new line of thinking is working out for it. Apple CEO Tim Cook has called self-driving "a core technology that we view as very important". There is no indication that Apple is testing autonomous cars outside its home state. "It's probably one of the most hard AI projects actually to work on". The DMV also revealed that a second unnamed company had requested approval to begin driverless testing, but hasn't parted with any additional details.
