Facebook closes 583 million fake accounts

Facebook's head of global policy management Monika Bicket said the group had kept a commitment to recruit 3,000 more staff to lift the numbers dedicated to enforcing standards to 7,500 at the start of this year.

Along with fake accounts, Facebook said in its transparency report that it had removed 21 million pieces of content featuring sex or nudity, 2.5 million pieces of hate speech and nearly 2 million items related to terrorism by Al Qaida and ISIS in the first quarter of 2018.

The self-assessment came Tuesday in Facebook's first breakdown of how much material it removes in an effort to shield its 2.2 billion users from offensive content and prevent the social network from becoming a terrorist recruitment center.

"We took down 21 million pieces of adult nudity and sexual activity in Q1 2018 - 96 percent of which was found and flagged by our technology before it was reported", said Mr Rosen.

Under increasing pressure to disclose how it polices its platform, Facebook revealed it took down 837 million pieces of spam content between January and March of this year. In Q1, we disabled about 583 million fake accounts in Q1 - most of which were disabled within minutes of registration.

Facebook says it disabled almost 1.3 billion fake accounts in the six months through March.

The company estimated that for every 10,000 pieces of content seen on Facebook overall, between seven and nine of them violated its adult nudity and pornography standards. But users are still reporting the majority of hate-speech posts, or about 62 percent of them, before Facebook takes them down.

Facebook took action against 2.5 million pieces of hate speech content during the period, a 56 increase over October-December.

The company has been using artificial intelligence to help pinpoint the bad content, but Rosen said the technology still struggles to understand the context around a Facebook post pushing hate, and one simply recounting a personal experience.

With regards to graphic violence, 3.5 million items were removed in Q1 2018 and 86% was flagged before it was reported.

However, messages inciting hatred, the robot can distinguish much more hard - a computer's intelligence does not understand the cultural and contextual features, so in this category, Facebook is largely dependent on staff moderators.

The report also addressed that users will be notified about the detection of these flagged posts and this amounts to 85.6 percent of the user base.

It's also why we are publishing this information. "We look forward to your feedback".

Since the fallout over political firm Cambridge Analytica obtaining millions of Facebook users' data without their permission, Facebook reiterated its commitment to being more transparent.
