Laurel or Yanny? This audio clip is driving the internet insane

People either hear 'Yanny' or 'Laurel' in this one clip and it’s tearing the whole damn internet apart

"Yanny.... I listened 10 times and cant figure out how anyone hears laurel", one person Tweeted.

The reason Yanny or Laurel is the rightful heir to the horror of the blue and gold dress is that people find it nearly impossible to understand HOW anyone could hear the opposite word.

Listeners were asked to choose whether the voice was saying "laurel" or "yanny", with the results nearly evenly split between the two.

Introducing: the Yanny-Laurel debate that's fractured the internet.

This takes us back to the social media debates over the blue/gold or white/black dress and the gray or pink shoe.

But just about everyone is pointing to this Reddit post from Roland Camry as the original source of the Laurel-Yanny conundrum. Or so they say, because no matter how much I mess with the audio I can hear only Laurel ... only Laurel.

That's one word being spoken but with two interpretations.

So why do we all hear different things? Turn up the volume on decent speakers and you may hear laurel. Also, our ears love to play tricks on us, making audio illusions just as fun as optical illusions. Some of my colleagues hear "Yanny", in a higher-pitched, slightly more nasal voice.

Here's another example of a visual cue affecting the way a word is heard.

But that doesn't necessarily explain why someone would hear the lower or higher frequencies.
