Turkey expels Israeli consul in spat over Gaza violence

Turkey bank vows'necessary steps after lira crashes to new lows

Turkey told Israel's ambassador to leave the country after Israeli forces killed 60 Palestinians during protests on the Gaza border against the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem.

Israel responded by ordering the Turkish consul in Jerusalem, Hüsnü Gürcan Türkoğlu, to leave for an unspecified period of time, its foreign ministry said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, now on a visit to Britain, had on Monday stepped up his rhetoric, accusing Israel of "state terror" and "genocide" over the killings.

Turkey on Tuesday asked the diplomat to leave the country.

Hours later Israel's Foreign Ministry said the Turkish Consul-General in Jerusalem had been summoned and told to return to Turkey "for consultations for a period of time".

The ministry says Umut Deniz, the Turkish charge d'affaires in Tel Aviv, was being summoned Wednesday because of the "inappropriate treatment" of Israeli ambassador Eitan Naeh, who was expelled from Ankara following the deadly violence in Gaza.

Thousands of Palestinians gathered on the Gaza Strip's eastern border on May 14 to take part in mass rallies to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment-an event Palestinians refer to as the "Nakba" or the "Catastrophe" and to protest the relocation of the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

"The dispute appears to mark the worst diplomatic crisis between the two regional powers since Israeli marines stormed an aid ship to enforce a naval blockade of Gaza in 2010, killing 10 Turkish activists and prompting a downgrade in diplomatic ties that lasted until 2016". "Netanyahu has Palestinian blood on his hands and he is the Prime Minister of an Apartheid State", Erdogan said. "There is no doubt he well understands terrorism and slaughter", Netanyahu tweeted.

After talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Erdogan warned that history "will not forgive" Israel or the United States for moving the American embassy to Jerusalem in defiance of outrage in the Islamic world. "It all boils down to the fact of making a choice - are we going to side with the strong or side with those who are right?" While accepting that Israel had the right to defend its borders, she said its use of live ammunition was "deeply troubling".

He famously walked out of a January 2009 debate in Davos with then Israeli president Shimon Peres, complaining he was not given enough time to respond and repeatedly saying "one minute".

Meanwhile the Turkish presidency said that on a visit to London on Tuesday Erdogan met a delegation of ultra-orthodox Jews from anti-Zionist group Neturei Karta, a very small splinter group on the margins of ultra-Orthodox Jewry.

Erdogan will on Friday host an emergency summit meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul which he has said will send a "strong message to the world" on the whole issue.
