"With shots ringing out toward the school, he charged toward the suspect head on", said Dixon Police Chief Steve Howell.

The shooter, who's name has not been released, is expected to survive. The suspect refused to comply with the officer and allegedly opened fire. The shooter fired at the officer several times. "A lot of things went right today, when a great many of them could have gone wrong", Dixon Mayor Liandro Arellano Jr. said at a press conference Wednesday.

According to the city of Dixon website, the school resource officer position was started by the Dixon Police Department in 2000 to help prevent school violence. The former student ran away and out of the school.

Students have been reunited with their families.

City manager Danny Langloss told Sauk Valley Mediathat students had been gathered in the gym for graduation practice when the shooting happened.

The teenager was taken into custody near the school and is now under medical supervision.

Dixon police believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no further threat to the safety of students or staff, Langloss added.

"I extend my deep gratitude to @DixonPolice, & the Officer on-site, for their swift action & for keeping our students & teachers safe", Kinzinger tweeted.

Dixon High School was evacuated and parents are now being allowed to pick-up their children. He was shot by the school resource officer, according to the report. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening. He is in custody.

WQAD 8 reports that no one else was injured during the armed confrontation.

The suspect is now in custody, with Dixon PD saying they believe that he acted alone, and that there is no further threat to the public.
