FG condemns killing of 58 unarmed Palestinian demonstrators

PE protesters join rage against Israel

The Palestinians, who seek east Jerusalem as capital of their hoped-for state and vehemently oppose the USA move, recalled their ambassadors to four European countries that had supported it. More than 2,700 people were injured, many by live ammunition.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the thorniest obstacles to forging a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, who with broad worldwide backing want East Jerusalem, captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, as their capital.

The new brutality in Gaza on Monday, when Israel's armed force killed 60 Palestinians amid challenges, came as the United States formally moved its consulate to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales dedicated the embassy just two days after a high-powered American delegation marked the transfer of the U.S. Embassy.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz earlier on Monday reported that Vietnam was among the 32 countries that participated in the gala on Sunday.

Organisers say the Gaza protests are civilian actions, noting the absence of Israeli casualties, compared to 107 Palestinian dead and thousands of wounded.

The two posts in northern and southern Gaza Strip are close to the border with Israel.

Supporters of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya react during his speech near the border with Israel east of Gaza City on May 15, 2018.

But with the images of rifle-toting Israeli snipers facing off against seemingly unarmed protesters beamed around the world, the remarks by Hamas may do little to convince Israel's detractors, including the Palestinians. Organisers said the protest would stretch into June.

On Wednesday, a day after expelling Israel's ambassador in response to the Gaza deaths, Turkey ordered the Israeli consul general in Istanbul to return home.

The trucks entered Tuesday, as medical facilities in Gaza were struggling to treat hundreds of people wounded by Israeli fire the day before.

Israel, which has faced blistering global criticism over its response, is likely to latch on to the remarks to bolster its claims that Hamas has used the weekly border protests as cover to stage attacks.

Abbas isn't yet ending security coordination, avoiding the move most likely to trigger a crisis with Israel and possibly the collapse of his West Bank-based autonomy government.

The U.N. Security Council held a special session that began with a moment of silence for the Palestinians who were killed.

"We call for a credible global investigation into the crimes committed by the occupation", Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit said at an extraordinary meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo on Thursday to discuss the violence. Israel's military said those comments proved the protests were not peaceful.

At the same time, Israel has found other nations following the USA lead and rallying to its defense. Romania, the Czech Republic and Honduras have said they are considering doing the same.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki said Wednesday that he has asked the ICC for an appointment to deliver a "state party referral" of a case against Israel.
