US Official's Brain Injury In China Matches Cuba Problem - Pompeo

US gov't worker reports

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that "the medical indications are very similar and entirely consistent" with the symptoms reported by Americans working at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba.

Although details on the Guangzhou employee's condition is unclear, Jinnie Lee, a US embassy spokeswoman in Beijing confirmed that the staffer had experienced a number of physical health symptoms over the past year, reported the Washington Post. The Chinese government has assured the US that it is investigating the matter and taking appropriate measures, according to a State Department spokesperson.

The notification said the department was not aware of any other cases inside or outside the diplomatic community.

An employee of the USA government in Guangzhou, China, has reported mysterious symptoms similar to those experienced by State Department employees in Cuba. The embassy learned of her brain injury last week and issued a health alert to USA citizens in China on Wednesday.

It added: "If you experience any unusual acute auditory or sensory phenomena accompanied by unusual sounds or piercing noises, do not attempt to locate their source".

The report comes as the U.S.is seeking to negotiate concessions from China to narrow its trade deficit. The mployee was sent back to the United States for assessment.

The still-unexplained incidents sparked a rift in US-Cuban relations, while investigators have chased theories including a sonic attack, electromagnetic weapon or flawed spying device.

US warns staff in China: Beware of unusual sounds

Ms. Lee said the employee experienced "a variety of physical symptoms" between late 2017 through April 2018. "Instead, move to a location where the sounds are not present", the emailed alert said. After being sent to the US, a clinical evaluation determined the employee had a "mild traumatic brain injury", she said.

China's Foreign Ministry are investigating the incident in Guangzhou but is yet to comment.

The US originally called the Cuba incidents "sonic attacks" but later backed off that phrasing as medical experts examined the patients and found their symptoms and conditions to be of mysterious origins.

"We can not at this time connect it with what happened in Havana but we are investigating all possibilities", a U.S. Embassy official in Beijing told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

In Cuba, the USA reported that some of its diplomatic personnel and family members experienced a range of ailments, some after hearing an unusual sound.

The victims reported headaches, hearing loss, disorientation and some loss of cognitive ability.
