Jared Kushner finally gets permanent security clearance

Jared Kushner speaking in the White House

Jared Kushner, who is leading a White House effort to jump-start peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, has been granted security clearance after operating for months without it, United States media outlets reported on Wednesday.

The FBI finally cleared Kushner after more than 17 months of vetting, The New York Times reported.

The news comes as Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, lost access to sensitive intelligence in February because he was never permanently cleared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was operating on an interim security clearance, which only gave him access to "secret" level intelligence, The NYT reported.

Kushner was considered one of various White Home aides that had been working within the administration with out a everlasting safety clearance for the higher a part of a yr.

Lowell also said Kushner sat for a seven-hour meeting with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team for a second time in April.

Lowell told Newsweek that Kushner was one of the first to cooperate in any investigation involving the Trump campaign. Like the president, Kushner was previously a wealthy real estate magnate and headed up his family's company. "In each occasion, he answered all questions asked and did whatever he could to expedite the conclusion of all the investigation".

CBS News reported in November that Kushner had been interviewed by the special counsel's office.

The first interview with Kushner occurred last fall.

The White House defended the lengthy process for issuing a permanent clearance to Kushner, citing the senior adviser's myriad business dealings and complicated finances. He could lose his clearance tomorrow if he is indicted.

Mr Kushner's lawyer Abbe Lowell said in a statement that "Mr Kushner's application was properly submitted, reviewed by numerous career officials and underwent the normal process". He said career staff at the White House and in an intelligence agency, typically the CIA, generally make the decisions about restoring a clearance. At the time, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News that Kushner's downgraded clearance may still allow him access to sensitive information, but details were never clarified.

Part of that investigation is examining meetings Kushner attended in 2016 with Russian representatives and officials. This caps a almost 18- month review of his security application, which was held up after Kushner failed to disclose contacts he had with foreign officials - including Russians - as required by law.
