Christopher Johnson will pay Jets players' anthem protest fines

The Detroit Lions were one of many teams that had players kneel during the national anthem at some point last season

The policy forbids players from sitting or taking a knee on the field during the anthem but allows them to stay in the locker room.

Earlier Tuesday, the National Football League issued the new policy, which states that all players who are on the field during the anthem must "stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem".

Goodell said team owners, with the exception of Jed York of the San Francisco 49ers, unanimously approved the new provisions, but the player's union said it was not consulted.

Ashley Johnson of Elliott said, "If they are willing to stand up and say, 'I don't want to stand during the national anthem".

New York Jets chairman Christopher Johnson told Newsday that he voted for the new policy because "I felt I had to support it from a membership standpoint".

"As has been said, I think we have spent a lot of time really, not just at this meeting, but really over the past year discussing the subject of the anthem and working with our players to try to make sure we could get to a place where all the different viewpoints could be respected", said Steelers President Art Rooney II.

NFL players will be fined if they kneel during the U.S. national anthem. I'd rather sit or I'd rather kneel, ' I don't think they should be fined. "So I think that should be the focus now, and hopefully it is moving forward".

Jenkins' Philadelphia Eagles teammate - also issued a statement after the league's announcement on Wednesday afternoon. "This is not and was never the case", the commissioner said. "I think that's good", Trump said in the interview that taped Wednesday.

Johnson, who is serving as the team's acting owner while his brother Woody serves out his term as the U.S. Ambassador to the Britain, issued a statement shortly after the decision was announced by National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell. "I hope we can have a good, respectful conversation: Is it the best policy for us to write a check to the league [for further on-field protests] or can we find a better way to use this money".

"The NFL makes the rules and we work within the NFL", he said. Johnson said if his players are fined, he will cover the cost.

Many fans criticized the players' plan, and all Steelers players stood on the field during the anthem for the remainder of the season.

The protests, in a league where African-Americans make up the majority of players, continued for much of the past season, with some players kneeling when the anthem was played and others standing arm-in-arm in solidarity.

The 49ers employed two of the most prominent players who have used the anthem to protest racial inequality and police brutality: quarterback Colin Kaepernick and safety Eric Reid. Johnson also has worked closely with several Jets players, as well as former linebacker Demario Davis, who now plays with the Saints, to promote social justice and criminal reform issues. I mean, the NBA's been doing it that way for 20 years and they haven't had an issue, right? He said owners should fire anyone who kneels during the anthem at a rally in Alabama last September.
