With nearly 4,000 full-size American flags being raised to fly, Floral Haven Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens in Broken Arrow will host its 46th annual Memorial Day Ceremony and Avenue of the Flags. Keynote espeaker will be writer Dave Gathman, a former reporter for The Courier-News, who will talk about the war and Elgin's involvement in it.

The Grand Rapids Memorial Day parade will be on Wednesday, May 30 at 7 p.m. Participating will be Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769 and Auxiliary, Effingham; American Legion Post 924 and Auxiliary, Teutopolis; American Legion Post 120 and Auxiliary, Effingham and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 and Auxiliary, Effingham. The outreach is scheduled from 10 2 Thunderbird Park located at 20700 Wichita Road in Apple Valley, just behind the Super Target.

Morning memorial services will begin at the Alaska Cemetery at 9 a.m. and continue at Blain Cemetery at 9:45 a.m., Dutton Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at the Holy Corners at 11:15 a.m. A memorial service will be held immediately following the parade in front of the courthouse.

Members of Post 781 are asked to meet at the post home at 10 a.m. Schedule: 10:30 a.m., VFW Post 7918 Memorial, Slocum Township; 11 a.m., St. Matins in the Field Church (Stone Church); 11:30 a.m., St. Mary's Cemetery, Dorrance Township; Noon, Emmanuel Church, end of Aberdeen Road; 12:30 p.m., Albert Cemetery, Church Road; 1 p.m., Mountain Post 781 Memorial. Theodore J. Hoffman VFW Post 1769 will lay a wreath in remembrance of Theodore J. Hoffman.

Whitehurst-Ware American Legion Post 539 in New Bern has its annual poppy distribution Saturday and Sunday. Afterward, a memorial service will be held in the Commons for military and fire service personnel. Guest speaker Col. Christopher Busch, U.S. Marine Corps.

Hastings: 9 a.m. Monday flag-raising at Minnesota Veterans Home, 1200 E. 18th St., followed by 10 a.m. ceremony at Roadside Park.

It is not necessary to salute every American flag that passes. The Joliet American Legion band will begin playing at 11 a.m. The program will be held at the Effingham Performance Center. The cost is $12 for adults, $3 for children under 5, and $20 for all you can eat.

All local World War II veterans, along with veterans from all eras, are invited and encouraged to be featured marchers in the first parade division. Twenty-one gun salute and taps will be performed. The color guard, veterans and rifle squad will then join other parade units at Kewaunee High School. Main Street Bridge memorial service for those lost at sea begins at 10:15 a.m. The guest speaker will be retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Ronald Sampson, a Hillsboro High School graduate who flew combat missions in Vietnam and retired in 1997 after 30 years on active duty.

Also performing patriotic music will be the Carolina East Singers, directed by Susan Bailey, and Croatan High School Band, directed by Kim Barclift. "The Memorial Day program will consist of the invocation, presentation of the national colors, singing of the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, the introduction of Gold Star Mothers, and a reading of the Gettysburg Address".

Memorial Day - a national observance that dates to the mid and late 1860s - again has many events slated locally and across the coastal region this weekend and on Monday's Memorial Day. Master of Ceremonies will be Brownstown Village President Virginia Wilber. Weather permitting, the Commemorative Air Force will conduct a flyover during the ceremony. The annual South Salem United Methodist Church Strawberry Social will be held following the parade.

The ceremony is held in partnership with the American Legion Post 502, City of Moorpark, American Legion Auxilary, Boy Scouts, the Forty & Eight and Kiwanis Club of Moorpark.
