Trump welcomes North Korea openness after scrapped summit

Donald Trump Trump

It could even be the 12th.

Other Democrats said they wanted North Korea to disarm, but knew it wouldn't happen quickly without intense preparations that they said Trump wasn't willing to do.

"Negotiations 101: The best deals you can make are the ones you walk away from...and then get them with better terms", he tweeted in May 2014. We'd like to do it.

"We even inwardly hoped that what is called "Trump formula" would help clear both sides of their worries and comply with the requirements of our side and would be a wise way of substantial effect for settling the issue", he said, without elaborating.

Kim said the United States is at fault for what Trump described as North Korea's "hostility", saying that Pyongyang was responding to "excessive" US comments pressuring the country to "unilaterally discard" its nuclear weapons ahead of the summit.

President Donald Trump is kicking off his Memorial Day weekend by absolutely burying Democrats on Twitter.

"Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting", read Mr Trump's letter to Mr Kim, which was dictated word-for-word by the U.S. leader, according to a senior White House official. "North Korea summit. We tell the United States once more that we are open to resolving problems at any time in any way".

It followed an announcement earlier in the day from the White House that Trump had cancelled the June 12 summit due to "open hostility" from Kim Jong Un.

But Pyongyang's reaction to the sudden U-turn has so far been conciliatory.

While the Trump administration had insisted on North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of its nuclear program, Pyongyang had always couched its language in terms of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Trump stunned aides in March when he accepted an offer made on Kim's behalf by South Korean emissaries for a summit to discuss denuclearisation. Trump has seemed to welcome chatter of a Nobel Peace Prize, but that had yielded in recent weeks to the sobering prospect of ensuring a successful outcome with the Kim.

The US summit cancellation blindsided treaty ally South Korea, which until now had brokered a remarkable detente between Washington and Pyongyang, with President Moon Jae-in calling the move "shocking and very regrettable".

"Our commitment to doing our best for the sake of peace and stability for the world and the Korean Peninsula remains unchanged, and we are open-minded in giving time and opportunity to the USA", he said.

North Korea had sharply criticized suggestions by Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, and Vice President Mike Pence that it could share the fate of Libya if it did not swiftly surrender its nuclear arsenal.

"Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting", read Trump's letter to Kim.

But he said talks could still go ahead "at a later date".

Trump attacked House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi over her criticism of his decision to publicly brand MS-13 gang members "animals" during a White House meeting on immigration last week.

But Pyongyang has vowed it will never give up its nuclear deterrent until it feels safe from what it terms U.S. aggression.

Sanders indicated it had yet to be decided whether White House officials would stick to a plan to travel to Singapore in coming days to prepare the summit.

Kim also said Trump's decision was "not consistent with the desire of humankind for peace and stability in the world, to say nothing of those in the Korean Peninsula".

It also was unhappy about the North's failure to allow worldwide observers to verify the dismantling of the Punggye-ri test site, the staging ground for all six of its nuclear tests which was buried inside a mountain near the border with China.

Trump later told reporters the summit could still happen on June 12 as planned.

"His unsteady hand has left everyone scratching their heads, including our ROK (South Korean) allies". Moon urged direct talks between Trump and Kim to get things back on track.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said in an interview on the same program Friday morning, "Everybody who is criticizing the President regarding the letter, how well did you do in North Korea?'" He added that he thought the letter was the "right decision".
