First named storm of Atlantic Hurricane Season has formed

Tropical depression formation expected Saturday

Yesterday, the National Hurricane Center released its 2018 hurricane forecast, and they expect 2018 to be an "active season", with between 10 to 16 named storms, five to nine of which being hurricanes. This will be a weekend for fireworks for the Memorial Day weekend and unfortunately, it will be a washout for the majority of the Southeast.

The tropical disturbance in the northwestern Caribbean became better organized and the National Hurricane Center has categorized it as Subtropical Storm Alberto.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain to the Yucatan Peninsula, western Cuba, Florida and the northeastern Gulf Coast throughout the weekend. The northern Gulf Coast could then see flooding rain, winds strong enough to form tornadoes, and isolated storm surge flooding. If it strengthens into a tropical storm, it will be named Alberto. One to four hurricanes could be considered "major" with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour.

Heavy rains from the Gulf of Mexico spawned flooding in the Southeastern states ahead of what forecasters said Wednesday could become the year's first tropical storm just as tourist season begins.

A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible in the in watch area in the next 48 hours.

As far as Friday goes, it will be warm and very muggy with the chance of scattered showers and a few storms. The rain is expected to intensify into Sunday and continue into Memorial Day.

Also further north into the central Gulf Coast region and the southeastern United states later this weekend and even early next week.

The Government of Cuba has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.

Over the next 24 hours, what was once known as Invest 90L will move north into the Gulf of Mexico. Rainfall could reach up to 6 inches in parts of Florida up to the Carolinas, Weather.com reported. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Many times these subtropical storms transform into true tropical cyclones.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida, the area will receive between three and six inches of rain through Tuesday. Wet weather will be most likely in the late afternoon and evening.
