Gaza officials: 86 hurt by Israeli fire in border protest

Two Palestinians killed by Israeli tank fire in Gaza

"The IDF and the security forces are working around the clock to defend the State of Israel, to protect the citizens of Israel and to defend the borders of Israel", the prime minister concluded.

The Israeli military said the attack was a response to an explosive being placed near the border fence, which burst while being dismantled.

Islamic Jihad is the second-most powerful armed group in the Gaza Strip, after Hamas, which runs the Palestinian enclave.

At least 118 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the Gaza Strip since mass protests and clashes broke out on March 30, according to figures from the Gazan health ministry.

At least 115 Palestinians have been killed and thousands hurt by army gunfire in the protests, drawing foreign censure.

The plan comes ahead of the eighth anniversary on Thursday of a deadly raid on Turkish-registered Mavi Marmara - part of a flotilla of six vessels seeking to break Israel's blockade and enter Gaza.

"Gaza has become a big, isolated prison, deprived of minimal rights, because of the unjust Israeli siege", they said in a statement, referring to clampdowns by Israel and neighbor Egypt.

The Defense Ministry has started construction on an underwater barrier, which will stretch from the southern Israeli community of Zikim out into the Mediterranean to stave off Hamas infiltration by sea.

Two Palestinians have been killed early on Sunday in an Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip, officials said.

According to Erez Cohen, the head of the Defence Ministry's Engineering and Construction Department, the work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The defense forces tweeted "No injuries to IDF soldiers were reported".

One of the targets, in the southern town of Rafah, was a facility of the Islamist movement's military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the sources said.

"We'll deal with the kites, too", security cabinet minister Naftali Bennett told Israel Radio, when asked about the military's actions around Gaza. During this period, five more people were killed in the West Bank. Hundreds attended his funeral in Jerusalem on Sunday.
