Weinstein turned himself in to the New York Police Department and was charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women.

Actress Rose McGowan, who accused Harvey Weinstein of rape, applauded the arrest of the Hollywood media mogul in NY on Friday.

Women in Hollywood applauded on Thursday after Harvey Weinstein turned himself into authorities in NY after a months-long investigation into multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.

A police official previously said Weinstein will be charged with committing a criminal sex act after an aspiring actress alleged he forced her to perform oral sex in 2004.

We may find out their decision when Weinstein next appears in court on July 30.

Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, declined to comment when first contacted about the charges late Thursday, but had said that Weinstein has consistently denied any allegations of "nonconsensual sex".

Brafman called the charges "constitutionally flawed" and "not supported by the facts", and he reiterated Weinstein's claim that all the sexual activities he engaged in with his accusers was consensual. The NYPD did the same, stating it "thanks these fearless survivors who have come forward".

The charges follow a flood of accusations against Weinstein that led women around the world to come forward with accounts of being sexually harassed by powerful men.

Actress Rose McGowan, who has accused Weinstein of raping her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival, said she was "shocked".

His wife, fashion designer Georgina Chapman, left him soon after the allegations surfaced, with police criminal investigations ongoing in London, Los Angeles and NY.

Weinstein was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court.

The charges stem from encounters with two of the dozens of women - some famous, some not - who have accused him of sexual misdeeds. Numerous women have said they felt cornered, with some describing how they were simply too afraid to say no, terrified of being shunned from Hollywood all together. "We look forward to seeing justice prevail". He agreed to not leave the New York State or CT without court permission, and has also agreed to wear a Global Positioning System tracking device.

He didn't enter a plea, however his lawyer indicated he would plead not guilty. The 66-year-old Oscar victor was accused of sexual misconduct in investigative reports published by The New York Times and The New Yorker in October 2017.

"Weinstein had until recently seemed untouchable, harnessing his wealth and his influence in the movie industry to intimidate women out of speaking publicly and, only three years ago, withstand an investigation into groping allegations", the NYT report said.
