North Korea summit hopes soar as USA delegation visits

Sciutto What is Korean for 'whiplash?'

"I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day", Trump tweeted.

"What is unclear to Chairman Kim Jong Un is not the will for denuclearization, but the concern that if [North Korea] denuclearizes, whether the USA can end hostile relations and guarantee the security of the [Kim] regime", Moon said.

The White House said Sunday that USA negotiators are in North Korea preparing for a potential meeting with their counterparts.

North Korea said last week it dismantled its only known nuclear test site in Punggye-ri, but Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono expressed doubt about whether the site has been closed.

In an interview with Dana Bash, Clapper spoke on the letter Trump sent to Kim declaring the cancellation of a planned summit between the two leaders, originally slated for June 12.

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday his team arrived in North Korea to arrange for his possible meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Previously, a second inter-Korean summit had been scheduled for May 16, but North Korea abruptly cancelled the planned talks citing provocation from the annual U.S. "They certainly don't want the United States to take out their nuke and their missile facilities".

It remains far from clear how Trump and Kim might be able to bridge what appear to be vast differences in their expectations for what would be a historic meeting.

A senior South Korean official said later the two Koreas were discussing a possible non-aggression pledge and the start of peace treaty talks as a way of addressing Pyongyang's security concerns before US-North Korean negotiations. So we're looking at June 12th in Singapore.

But Trump accompanied the cancellation with a letter to Kim that mixed tough language with an nearly beseeching plea to get things back on track. "As you know there are meetings going on as we speak in a certain location which I won't name, but you'd like the location", he told reporters in Washington. "In some ways, Kim Jong Un may have met his match here with our very unconventional president".

"We're doing very well in terms of the summit with North Korea", Trump said at the White House.

Sen. Marco Rubio, Florida Republican, said he's skeptical that Mr. Kim will agree to completely give up his country's nuclear capabilities, saying the leader has an nearly emotional attachment to them and that they make him feel prestigious and powerful.

There are still stark differences between what the two sides hope to achieve.

Most analysts still thinks it is extremely unlikely that North Korea will surrender its nuclear weapons.

Pyongyang has a different view of denuclearization and remains deeply anxious that abandoning its deterrent would leave the country - and its leader - vulnerable, especially while the United States maintains a robust military presence in South Korea. Nonetheless, Trump said on Sunday that the meeting could be back on.

"When you see him, it's very hard to make out".

The talks, which Moon said Kim Jong Un requested, capped a whirlwind 24 hours of diplomatic back and forth.

Terry agreed, saying it's going to be a "long way to go before we get to complete, irreversible dismantlement of the North Korea's nuclear program because it is still reversible". "I think yes, it would be important to have the summit", he said.
