Man Jailed In Venezuela For 2 Years Welcomed Home By Trump

American Citizen Held in Venezuela Released, Trump Announces

Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) personally met with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, along with Corker and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, worked to secure the release of Holt and his wife, Thamy.

Trump said Holt, 26, would be in Washington, D.C., Saturday evening at about 7 p.m. Speaking to the President on Saturday night, Holt told a group of politicians and family inside the Oval Office it had been a "very very hard two years", and 'not really the great vacation I was looking for'.

Holt traveled to Venezuela in June 2016 to marry a woman, Thamara Candelo, who he met online.

Venezuelan officials released Holt on Saturday after high-level talks between President Nicolas Maduro and USA lawmakers.

A White House spokesperson thanked the Maduro "regime" for releasing the "unjustly detained" Holt from detention, but said United States foreign policy towards the country would not change.

A day after Maduro's swearing-in, the USA prohibited purchases of debt owed to the Venezuelan government, including to its state-run oil company. "I could not be more honored to be able to reunite Josh with his sweet, long-suffering family in Riverton", he said.

Earlier, NSC officials told CNN's Boris Sanchez that the USA "offered nothing" to Venezuelan leadership in exchange for the release of Holt.

Josh Holt, the man with ties to Pocatello, and his wife Thamy has been released from a Venezuelan jail.

In a statement Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo nodded to the efforts of those who had followed Holt's plight.

Trump asked everyone sitting with him in the Oval Office to speak about Holt's release but was surprised - and amused - when Lee turned to Holt's daughter to address her in Spanish.

In an emotional speech to the President in the Oval Office, Hatch told Trump: "You know, I was the one guy who really supported you 100 per cent, and I do now".

President Donald Trump shakes hands with Joshua Holt, who was recently released from a prison in.

In a Facebook video, Holt said, "I'm calling on the people of America: I need your help to get me out of this place.

We are grateful to all who participated in this miracle".

The next morning, they were told to pack their things and prepare to go.

The release comes amid a shaky period in U.S. -Venezuela relations and just days after Maduro won reelection in a vote that has been widely denounced as illegitimate. The two have been held without trial since they were arrested shortly after the wedding in 2016. Police allegedly found a cache of weapons and evidence he was involved in the assassination plot of a Venezuelan official.

Maduro was re-elected to a six-year term in controversial elections May 20 that were boycotted by most opposition parties and rejected as illegitimate by the United States and other countries.
