Although state health officials in Kerala - a popular travel destination for Gulf tourists - have declared the state safe, they have cautioned travellers against visiting the districts of Kozhikode, Malappura, Waynad and Kannur.

The National Centre for Disease Control has issued high alert across the country after an outbreak of the Nipah virus (NiV) infection in Kerala. Another 14 people are confirmed to have contracted Nipah virus, while 22 are awaiting test results after showing symptoms. "It made an effort to create awareness and allay any fears in the minds of the people about the disease", the health ministry said in a statement.

The first fatal cases in Kerala were reported on Saturday from a family in Kozhikode, as two brothers in their late 20s and their 50-year-old aunt died from the virus.

About 160 samples have been sent for testing at the virology institute and 13 cases have been found to be positive, she said.

It is noted that Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J.P Nadda taking cognizance of the issue, and also directed to constitute a team of six doctors to investigate the outbreak of the rare and deadly virus. Drinking this toddy or consuming bat-bitten fruits can also cause human infection.

After reviewing the cases of all the patients who have lost their lives, the Central High-level Team is of the view that the Nipah virus disease is not a major outbreak and is only a local occurrence. Seven of these victims are from Kozhikode district, including the first three victims from a single family, and three from the neighbouring Malappuram district. World Health Organization said that the natural hosts of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, genus Pteropus.

Human-to-human transmission has also been documented.

"It was a highly localized infection and we have been able to contain it well", Indian Health Secretary Preeti Sudan told the media late Wednesday evening.

As of now, there is no vaccine for the treatment of Nipah Virus. The only treatment is supportive care to keep patients comfortable.

"Clinical features may vary from asymptomatic illness to a very severe form of brain fever (encephalitis ) with respiratory distress and heart failure in the form of myocarditis". The Nipaj virus infected 18 persons before it was localized and contained.
