Senior North Korean official heads to U.S. for talks

President Donald Trump left and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. Will they finally meet

The Washington Post reported that senior diplomat Sung Kim was leading the U.S. delegation and that the two sides planned to continue talking Monday and Tuesday.

A U.S. official told Reuters that Sung Kim, the former U.S. ambassador to South Korea, would lead an American delegation to meet North Korean officials at the border.

The Korean leaders' second summit in a month saw bear hugs and broad smiles. "We offered concessions to the North Korean regime in exchange for promises to end their nuclear weapons program only to see them break those promises and abandon them".

United States officials also entered North Korea yesterday to hold talks on preparations for a possible summit, a USA newspaper reported.

The U.S. has called for "complete, verifiable and irreversible" dismantling of the Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal. U.S. officials said the most likely document would provide a framework for future negotiations, without going into great detail about what North Korea might be willing to give up or what steps the United States would take in exchange.

The two diplomats have crossed paths several times in the past, especially during the six-party negotiation process.

Monday's advance pared losses incurred after Trump canceled the meeting last Thursday.

But Mr. Moon also made clear that any steps to dial back Mr. Kim's nuclear capabilities could come with strings attached. The White House National Security Council tells NPR's Scott Horsley that the us delegation in Panmunjom is distinct from the team led by Hagin.

"I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day".

Barring another turnaround on the Korean Peninsula, such a success is now unlikely to be connected to a nuclear deal with Kim Jong Un.

The State Department said earlier that a team was in Panmunjom, which straddles the border inside the demilitarized zone, or DMZ, separating the North and South Korea.

Moon was accompanied by his spy chief, Suh Hoon, while Kim was joined by Kim Yong Chol, a former military intelligence chief who is now Kim's top official on inter-Korean relations.

Hooker was also a part of a USA delegation led by Ivanka Trump, daughter of the president and his senior adviser, that attended the closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics at the end of February.

The last time the two sides were scheduled to meet, the North Koreans never materialized and Trump scrapped the summit.

In a conciliatory statement on Friday aimed at getting the summit back on track, North Korea said it favoured a "Trump formula" to resolve tensions and praised the president for agreeing to meet Mr Kim.

Thirdly, the former Conservative lawmaker insisted the total denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula remained a possibility, but warned this would likely demand the total removal of USA military personnel.

Sen. Marco Rubio, Florida Republican, said he's skeptical that Mr. Kim will agree to completely give up his country's nuclear capabilities, saying the leader has an nearly emotional attachment to them and that they make him feel prestigious and powerful.

Trump confirmed in a tweet that the team of advisories are in the secretive state to "make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself".

South Korea and China account for nearly all of North Korea's land borders, so their support is essential for enforcing sanctions ramped up past year after Mr Kim declared the ability to strike the United States with a nuclear weapon.
