Federal Bureau of Investigation warns of cyber threat targeting small businesses, reboot your router

FBI urges people to reboot routers to thwart hackers

The FBI is urging the public to reboot their home routers, the device that is the gateway to the internet for a wide array of electronic devices, due to a major malware attack.

A massive router malware attack has been spotted by security experts, infecting many home routers around the world, and there's a very good chance yours is one of them.

Last week, Cisco Talos researchers announced the malware had infected around 500,000 home and small office routers and NAS devices.

Make sure your router and any other network devices you are using are updated to the latest firmware. Rebooting interrupts the malware, if present.

This software is nasty, able to collect data travelling over the router and even killing the device if so desired. Rebooting your router will disrupt any malware currently on it, and the DOJ seizure should prevent the Russian malware from re-installing itself at least for now, according to The New York Times.

Consumers are also advised to select a new, secure password for their device and to consider disabling remote management settings on devices. That's one of the things the Federal Bureau of Investigation is asking people to do to help thwart a cyberattack it says agents of a foreign government are launching against USA citizens.

The VPNFilter malware can effect routers that are made by Linksys, Mikrotik, and Netgear, Symantec said.

According to a report from Forbes, the VPNFilter malware has been traced back to Sofacy Group, which is believed to be directed by Russia's military intelligence agency.

Experts from Silicon Valley say almost half a million routers are already under attack.

Traffic intended for the seized domain is now being redirected to an FBI-controlled domain that captures the IP addresses of infected devices.

Cisco's analysis found that VPNFilter has a two-stage infection process, with the first stage being capable of surviving a reboot.
