Zidane Quits Real Madrid

TWITTER

His decision to quit as Madrid coach suddenly left the Spanish club's future in limbo.

Appearing at a press conference alongside Real president Florentino Perez, World Cup victor Zidane said: "I have taken the decision to not continue going into the next season". Based on the president's reaction at the news conference - he hadn't even reached the grief stage as he was still processing Zidane's decsion - this was a bolt from the blue. Of course, this is a "see you later".

"I love this club, I love the president".

He further went on to add that he believes it is the "right decision", even though it may appear odd to everyone.

"I have thought a lot about this decision and I can´t go back on it".

"I had the respect of all the players, which has been fundamental in achieving such success". Asked if his decision might have gone differently had he not won that game, enigmatically, he said: "maybe".

He further expressed gratitude to the fans for their constant support.

"I want to thank Zizou for his dedication to the job, his passion and his affection". I thank you all for your support and there are hard times when there are whistles but that is part of this club.

Zidane said his best moment with Madrid was when he was signed to play for the club in 2001. It is a demanding team but the players need it.

Midfielder Isco echoed his captain's heartfelt comments, and praised Zidane for taking Madrid to a new level. "I have no doubt that he will return".

He further added that he was shocked to hear about the decision and would have wanted to convince him to stay. I loved him as a player and as a manager. "Zidane informed me of his choice yesterday".

"I did not know". This home is his family forever and always.

" When he says he's taken a decision though, we have to accept it".

The Frenchman took over a divided dressing room after the sacking of Rafael Benitez in January, 2016 and immediately set about uniting the squad.

Real Madrid's French coach Zinedine Zidane gestures the number three and holds the trophy as he celebrates winning the UEFA Champions League final football match between Liverpool and Real Madrid at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine, on May 26, 2018. This is a club who once decided against renewing Vincente del Bosque's contract in 2003 despite the fact he'd won the Spanish league title one day before and led the club through its most successful period since the 1960s.

Zidane said his decision had nothing to do with Real icon Cristiano Ronaldo hinting that he will also leave the club following the Champions League triumph on Saturday.

"I don´t see myself continuing to win this year and I am a victor, I don´t like to lose", added Zidane, who was under contract with Real until 2020.
