A Move to Vermont Could Net You $10K, but There's a Catch

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Even as US President Donald Trump has opted for protectionist policies, the American state of Vermont has chose to pay new residents who work remotely for an out-of-state firm in a quest to improve its residents and working population. The state will then issue grants to newly-minted Vermonters up to $5,000 per year for two years for things like moving expenses, Internet access, or a computer. And, no working for yourself: you must be employed full-time by a company outside the state.

Picturesque Vermont has a shrinking population and this effort is targeted at changing those demographics. The state's population is aging and getting smaller, Joan Goldstein, commissioner of economic development for Vermont, told CNN.

State officials have already been overwhelmed with the response to the moving incentive program.

Vermont is calling remote workers with a deal for them.

In 2019, Vermont will start paying $10,000 to eligible remote workers who move to the state.

The New Remote Worker Grant Program would require workers to become full-time residents of the Green Mountain State. About 25 remote workers each year will be able to benefit. In March, Governor Scott and the Vermont Division of Tourism and Advertising introduced the so-called Keep-to-Keep initiative, which is meant to assist vacationers relocate to the state.

The law Scott signed this week also includes a program created to convert some of the state's 13 million annual tourists into permanent residents.

It's been proven time and again: People who work from home report higher satisfaction, better health, and they also do their jobs more efficiently. The funds will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, and only $125,000 will be given out in 2019. Through this program, people who visit Vermont during certain weekends from April to October have the opportunity to network with local employers, entrepreneurs, and realtors.
