Lewinsky questions agitate Bill Clinton during book promo tour

President Clinton wouldn't say if he believed the results of the 2016 election which President Trump won were tampered with

But he's bristling at questions about Monica Lewinsky. And I've tried to do a good job since them with my life and with my work.

The former president has faced renewed criticism over his 1998 affair amid the recent movement, which led Melvin to ask whether Clinton thinks he should have stepped down rather than fight impeachment. "If the facts were the same today, I wouldn't", Clinton said during the interview.

The 71-year-old former President was impeached over lying about his affair with Lewinsky, infamously saying in a televised address that he "did not have sexual relations" with the then-22-year-old White House intern.

"I have never talked to her", Clinton told interviewer Craig Melvin of NBC News. "So, I just disagree with her". It is important to me that everyone who has been hurt know that the sorrow I feel is genuine - first and most important, my family, my friends, my staff, my cabinet, Monica Lewinsky and her family, and the American people.

"That's very different. The apology was public".

McAuliffe, the longtime personal and professional ally of the Clintons who backed their purchase of a NY mansion after Bill Clinton left office, addressed the controversy Monday following the former president's emphatic defense of himself during an interview with NBC News' Craig Melvin on the "Today" show.

The House Republicans' move against Mr Clinton in 1998 made him only the second United States president to have been impeached.

In an essay she wrote for Vanity Fair earlier this year, Ms Lewinsky said she went on to be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after being vilified and publicly shamed by the media.

The #MeToo movement is a campaign against sexual harassment and abuse that has swept through Hollywood and beyond.

Clinton's affair with Lewinsky was uncovered during independent counsel Kenneth Starr's investigation of Clinton's real estate dealings before becoming president. "He was 27 years my senior, with enough life experience to know better", she wrote.

Avoiding the Clinton dodge, Melvin pressed, "Well, I asked you if you'd ever apologized and you said you had".

Clinton's incoherent response is pretty much typical of the left's indefensible explanations for why the 42nd president got a pass then and is still getting one today. "You're asking, 'Well don't we have a right to change the rules?' Yes, but you don't the right to change the facts". And he even says at one point, I think it's overdue. "I left the White House 16 million dollars in debt". "All he needed to say in the interview is 'I am profoundly and deeply sorry'".
