Mike Pompeo cites 'real progress' after high-level talks with North Korea

North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol arrives at a hotel in New York U.S

Trump made the remarks at the White House after his nearly two-hour meeting with a senior official from Pyongyang who delivered a personal letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump.

US President Donald Trump confirmed that his Singapore Summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would take place on June 12, and said it would begin the process of denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

Mr Pompeo would not say that the summit is a definite go for Singapore on June 12 and could not say if that decision would be made after Mr Trump reads Kim Jong Un's letter.

Friday's announcement came after a top North Korean official arrived at the White House to deliver a letter to the president.

Naturally, when media personnel wanted to know more about the letter, the US President responded saying, "That letter was a very nice letter".

Meanwhile, North and South Korea say they've agreed to more talks to promote peace.

In the latest sign of hostility cooling down but hopes kept in check, Trump said he's unilaterally put a hold on new sanctions against the North "until the talks break down".

He says: "In light of how North Korea has behaved in the past, I believe that it is important not to reward North Korea exclusively for agreeing to have a dialogue".

In a move that is sure to worry USA allies in Japan and South Korea, Trump also said that he and his guest had discussed U.S. troop numbers on the Korean peninsula.

"We don't talk about what happened in the past".

In his letter printed on White House stationery, Trump, in an uncharacteristically warm and congenial tone, said he was canceling the summit because of North Korea's harsh comments about US officials.

After North Korean officials delivered a series of bellicose statements last month, Trump announced he was withdrawing from the summit with a strongly worded letter.

Because of the directness and weight of formality they provide, Kim might see personal letters as an important way to communicate with leaders of countries the North never had close ties with, Koh said.

Since the North signalled at the start of this year that it was open to a rapprochement with the South, with which it is still technically at war, North Korean leader Kim has met Chinese President Xi Jinping, South Korea's Moon Jae-in and has floated a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin this year. Just yesterday, we got news that employers added 223,000 jobs last month.

"Between now and if we're going to have a summit, they're going to have to make clear what they're willing to do".

Trump received Kim Yong Chol, a former North Korean spy chief who has been involved in decades of nuclear talks. "They want to develop as a country", Trump said. The sustained support among conservatives is notable at a time when Trump is pursuing a meeting with Kim, which is supported by liberals, Kang said.

The United States, Trump said, was going to ensure the security of Kim Jong-un. Separately, North and South Korea have also been talking about having talks of their own on reuniting families separated by the Korean War.

Kim Yong Chol left his hotel in New York City early Friday for the trip to Washington in a convoy of SUVs.
