Giuliani says statement on meeting was a mistake

Trump's team has attempted to discredit the investigation led by Robert Mueller and soften the impact of the special

USA president Donald Trump on Monday said he had committed no wrongdoing but has the "absolute" power to pardon himself, echoing an sweeping argument put forth by his lawyers amid the U.S. special counsel's investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 United States election.

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, a recent addition to the Trump legal team, told ABC's This Week that a president "probably does" have the power to pardon himself, even while he insisted that Trump had no intention of doing so.

President Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani claimed Sunday that Trump has the power to pardon himself.

Mr Giuliani underscored one of the main arguments in a newly unveiled letter sent by Mr Trump's lawyers to Mr Mueller back in January: A president can not be given a grand jury subpoena as part of the investigation into foreign meddling in the 2016 election.

Senate Minority Leader, Senator Chuck Schumer, slammed Trump for such a tweet, asserting that the president has no such power.

His willingness to ignore Justice Department guidelines on issuing pardons has some Democrats anxious he'll use it to help allies caught up in the investigation into Russian campaign meddling in 2016.

"Pardoning himself would be unthinkable and probably lead to immediate impeachment", Mr Giuliani, a member of Mr Trump's legal team, told NBC's Meet The Press. A president has never before pardoned himself.

In it they say he has absolute power as USA legal chief to end investigations, or "even exercise his power to pardon".

The American president claimed last week, without evidence, that the special counsel investigation would seek to interfere in this year's midterm elections.

A Virginia judge overseeing the trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort ordered Mueller's team to turn over the complete three-page memo from August outlining the specific crimes Mueller is authorized to investigate.

"I think that's what happened here", Giuliani said. "He's got to have the discipline to put a stop to it, or we're going to have to do everything we can, including some things that I don't think we'd want to talk about right now, to try to, to try to appeal to have it stopped", he said. He said he has informally made the request, but gotten no response.

The letter also cited the president's pardoning authority should Trump face indictments as a result of Mueller's probe. An attorney for President Donald Trump is playing down the possibility that Trump would try to - if it came to that.

Trump did not detail his grounds for claiming that the Mueller investigation is illegal.

So the issue of whether a president can pardon themselves is matter of interpretation because no president has tried to do it.
