Severed rattlesnake bites Corpus Christi man

The man beheaded it with a shovel but he soon found out how dangerous a dead snake can

A man who had just decapitated a rattlesnake in his back garden nearly died when he went to retrieve the head 15 minutes later and was bitten and infected with a huge dose of venom.

Jennifer Sutcliffe, from Corpus Christi in Texas, said her husband had spotted the 4ft snake in the garden, grabbed a shovel and decapitated it. But that didn't stop the snake's head from biting the man minutes later when he attempted to discard the remains.

She said hospital officials told her he might not survive, even though he received 26 doses of antivenom.

"There was actually three different times in the first 24 hours that the doctors told me that they didn't think he was going to make it", Jennifer said. The average number for snake bite is four doses, Mrs Sutcliffe said.

The key to surviving a snakebite, says Halpert, is to get medical help immediately if not sooner; nearly all victims of fatal snakebites in recent years died, at least in part, because they either refused medical treatment or didn't get it soon enough. The venom from the severed snake's head was more than most people tend to get in one bite, though-by a lot.

"You just want to keep the victim calm, keep the bitten area above the level of the heart slightly, and get the patient to the nearest emergency room", he said. He took a shovel and decapitated the snake, KIII TV reported. Last month, a selfless grandfather was praised as a hero after saving his granddaughter from an eastern brown snake bite. In fact, he said, "If you left the dead head there long enough the venom would degrade". He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent 26 doses of antivenom. However, he is in stable condition now. Reportedly, snakes can still bite after an hour of getting beheaded as they have slower metabolisms.
