Warren floats pot banking bill to help states circumvent federal ban

A bipartisan effort in Congress to ease federal restrictions on cannabis, which President Trump said Friday he is inclined to support, would solve a few of the biggest problems facing the nascent industry in several states, experts say.

Gardner introduced the Strengthening the Tenth Amendment Through Entrusting States (STATES) Act with progressive firebrand Sen. "I support Senator Gardner".

"The two of us", Warren said emphatically, as Gardner chuckled.

"We're looking at it", Trump said.

"The support of this bill is across a very wide spectrum of political ideologies", Gardner said.

However, it's available for recreational use in nine states and the District of Columbia.

Gardner says the bill will protect public safety by giving legitimate marijuana businesses acccess to banking.

In January, Attorney General Jeff Sessions removed prohibitions that kept federal prosecutors from pursuing cases against people who were following pot laws in states like Colorado and MA that have legalized the drug. "States like MA have put a lot of work into implementing common sense marijuana regulations - and they have the right to enforce their own marijuana policies". Elizabeth Warren said in a joint interview Thursday that Russian Federation special counsel Robert Mueller should be allowed to finish his investigation into meddling during the 2016 presidential election.

But the bill would not eliminate the long-standing federal prohibition on marijuana, even though 61 percent of Americans now support legalizing weed - double the support from 2000, according to a Pew Research survey from earlier this year.

Health Minister Petitpas Taylor has said that, once the bill is passed, provinces and territories will need two to three months to prepare before the retail sales of legal marijuana.

The bill would allow anyone 18 or older to publicly possess up to 30 grams of marijuana, a drug that has been available for medical use since 2001.

Despite his comments, Trump has sent mixed signals on the drug: While campaigning for president, he pledged to respect states that legalized marijuana, but he also has criticized legalization and implied it should be stopped.

Marijuana is considered an illegal, Schedule I substance by the federal government. Jared Polis (D-CO), David Joyce (R-OH) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) in the House - an important step as the bill must pass both houses of Congress in order to make it to Trump's desk.

The STATES Act introduced by Sens.

"The science is clear - medical marijuana treatments are effective", Warren said Thursday.

Once signed, the STATES Act would finally free cannabis companies to operate as normal businesses.
