Trump at G-7 summit: What you need to know

Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump declared before departing the annual Group of Seven summit in Canada for his meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday.

"The withdrawal, so to speak, via tweet is of course. sobering and a bit depressing", she said, according to Reuters.

Trudeau said he told Trump directly that Canada 'particularly did not take lightly the fact that [the tariffs were] based on a national security reason.' The prime minister said in comments reported by CTV: 'Canadians are polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around'.

In response to Trump's tweets, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau' s Office said that Trudeau has been consistent with Trump both in public and private conversations.

He said that he did not blame G7 leaders for the "unfair" trade deals, but previous USA presidents.

"International cooperation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks", President Emmanuel Macron's office said in a statement to AFP.

President Trump concluded his G7 meetings, declaring the US has been taken advantage of for decades on trade, and assured that all of the involved countries are much more committed to fair trade with America.

In the run-up to the G7 summit, Trump continued to rile up his fellow world leaders with accusations of unfair trade practices, provoking angry responses from both Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron, who even suggested that the G7 could fare as the G6, without the U.S. if need be.

Merkel responded to the tweet on Sunday, saying: "I don't think that inflammatory language makes things better".

The official was reacting after U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement on Saturday that he was backing out of the G7 communique drawn up at a summit in Canada.

The summit ends later today, but Trump is set to leave early, missing the discussion on climate change and protecting oceans. The EU also won't be "taken for a ride" in its trade conflict with the USA, she said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel posted an extraordinary picture from this weekend's G7 summit in Canada.

Trudeau later said he reiterated to Trump that tariffs will harm industries and workers on both sides of the U.S.

"The continuation of sanctions is clearly linked to Russia's failure to demonstrate complete implementation of its commitments in the Minsk Agreements and respect for Ukraine's sovereignty", it said.

Russian Federation was expelled following Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea in 2014, which Mr Trump characterised as "something happened a while ago".

Canada and members of the European Union, for example, recently fell victim to the USA steel and aluminum tariffs, and both have vowed to retaliate.
