Trump Kim summit: North Korea sets out its Singapore agenda

Flight from Pyongyang lands in Singapore ahead of North Korean leader’s arrival

But the value of the event - long sought by the North, and which Trump apparently impulsively agreed to in March, reportedly without consulting his advisers - has been called into question by many seasoned experts.

Even so, the summit continues to be a highly sensitive topic in North Korea and it is hard - even more so than usual - to get people to express their opinions about it.

Mr Kim's sister, Ms Kim Yo Jong, who is part of his entourage in Singapore, will likely also be at the summit table.

"Prime Minister Lee and Chairman Kim discussed Singapore-DPRK relations, developments in the DPRK and regional developments, including the recent positive developments on the Korean Peninsula", the statement reads. Trump travelled to Singapore from Canada, where he attended a meeting with other world leaders.

From Pyongyang, the North's official media Monday carried comparatively detailed reports on leader Kim Jong-un's visit to Singapore, including his arrival date and plan to hold his first meeting with Trump on Tuesday.

A dictator who until March had not even visited his closest neighbour and ally China, now being treated not as an worldwide pariah but a global statesman on the same level as the United States president.

"And again, I say that with hope that maybe something can happen", said the U.S. President. A large limousine with a North Korean flag was surrounded by other black vehicles with tinted window as it sped through the city's streets.

The leaders meet on Tuesday on the resort island of Sentosa and talks are expected to centre on ending the North's nuclear weapons and missiles programmes in return for diplomatic and economic incentives. "I know that Singapore is a very hot country so I wish that our respected Marshal stays healthy and comes back in good health".

Past year the North carried out what was by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched a flurry of missiles - including two over Japan - while Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged USA dotard". While foreign policy isn't usually a major aspect of congressional elections, it is unclear if Trump's focus on getting tough with trade partners and solving the Korean Peninsula issue will have some influence on voters in the mid-term polls in November.

Lawmakers and policymakers are closely watching this week's historic summit in Singapore between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea, many experts believe, stands on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

Trump touched down in Singapore on Air Force One Sunday, where he was greeted by Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and the U.S. Embassy's chargé d'affaires Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath.

Trump acknowledged uncertainty around the highly anticipated summit, saying he was bolstered by discussions in the run-up to the meeting and would not guarantee a specific outcome from the talks. While hostilities ended with an armistice in 1953, no peace treaty has been signed yet.

Arriving at the Prime Minister's office after 1900 local time, Kim shook hands with Lee and his staff then sat down to begin talks in front of the cameras before the press was ushered out a few minutes later.

"I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump wrote in a pair of tweets.
