UK Labour MPs Worried by Govt's EEA Deal With EU - Frontbencher

Brexit news Theresa May Brexiteers no-confidence vote David Davis Labour

The Prime Minister was forced to mollify different parts of her party - including those arch Brexiteers who would rather the United Kingdom crashed out of the European Union with no deal than the government agree to a soft Brexit, as well as rebellious Conservative MPs who want the public to have another vote on what Brexit will look like. Junior Minister quit the government so he could back the veto proposal.

The frontpages of Leave-backing British newspapers said accepting the amendments would betray the 52% who backed Brexit in the seismic 2016 referendum. "We must think about the message parliament will send to the European Union this week".

Justice minister Phillip Lee is the first minister to resign over the government's Brexit policy.

Crucial to it all will be the 10 DUP votes and they are expected to vote with the Government.

Details of the government's commitment will have to be formalised next week in a new amendment to the bill.

He confirmed that ministers will seek to overturn 14 amendments which he said would undermine the goal of the Bill and fail to respect the result of the 2016 referendum.

Pro-Brexit tabloid the Sun warned lawmakers on Tuesday's front page that they had a choice: "Great Britain or great betrayal".

The Daily Express, another pro-Brexit tabloid, issued a thinly-veiled threat to lawmakers, saying they should "Ignore the will of the people at [their] peril".

She was so supportive towards the former attorney general, as he argued for Parliament to have a "meaningful vote" on the terms of the Brexit deal, that it seemed probable she would join the Euro-rebels in voting for it....

But if the amendments being debated in Parliament this week force a change to the government's negotiating strategy, the wound could yet reopen.

Theresa May saw off a revolt from the pro-European wing of her fractured party, averting what could have been a major political crisis. "I can not support the government's decision to oppose this amendment because doing so breaches such fundamental principles of human rights and parliamentary sovereignty", he said.

Parliament will vote Tuesday on a key piece of legislation, the E.U. Withdrawal bill, that would transfer European Union laws now on British books into British law after Brexit.

"A vote between bad and worse is not a meaningful vote".

However Davis urged his backbench colleagues to fall in with the party, telling the BBC's Today programme Grieve's amendment would not give "the ability to reverse the decision of the referendum".

"The people want us to leave the EU".

On June 13, one amendment on joining the European Economic Area - the single market - will likely fall because the main opposition Labour Party is against it.
