At least 5 dead after SUV carrying illegal immigrants crashes, sheriff says

Here's a closeup look at a Border Patrol processing center in McAllen Texas

A criminal complaint said the driver in that case admitted to investigators that he traveled from Laredo to San Antonio. He said a Border Patrol agent initiated the pursuit before a unit for the sheriff's office took over.

Border Patrol officials have repeatedly warned of the dangers of smuggling large numbers of people in vehicles.

Boyd said there needs to be a wall built because this is a "real problem" in the area.

The crash Sunday morning on Highway 85 in Big Wells was the result of a chase that involved Border Patrol agents and Dimmit County deputies.

The SUV was carrying 14 people ― 12 of whom were ejected upon impact. "He was able to get him out of the vehicle and the driver was actually walking", Boyd said. That agent stopped one vehicle and radioed a description of the other two vehicles to other agents, the agency said.

The driver, a suspected smuggler and also believed to be a USA citizen, survived the crash, according to NBC News.

Another passenger, also reported to be a USA citizen, is under arrest in connection with the possible case of human smuggling.

Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, others were taken to area hospitals.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said it was investigating the crash, which occurred at 11:18 a.m. local time outside of Big Wells, Texas.

Boyd said the victims were taken to hospitals.

Images from the scene appeared to show a large four-door SUV-style vehicle badly wrecked in the middle of the road.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of those who died in the crash", The Border Patrol said in the statement.
