Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meets today to sight Shawwal moon

Islam Ramadan dates 2018 lunar calendar

Official decision by Central Moon Sighting Committee Pakistan and Central Moon Sighting Committee New Delhi is expected soon after Salate Maghrib Thursday evening.

The members of the Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committees will hold their meetings in their respective areas.

The Islamic month of Shawwal comes after the 29 or 30 days of the month of Ramadan when Muslims across the world observe a month long fasting.

Earlier, the PMD also informed the Ministry of Religious Affairs based on scientific calculations that there were "slight" chances of the moon being sighted today.

The money raised by those who attended the service Friday will go toward families in need in the community so they can buy clothes and gifts for holiday, also known as Eid.

Muslims believe that they are commanded by God, as mentioned in Quran, to continue their fast until the last day of Ramadan and pay the Zakat al-Fitr -a ritual offering- before offering the Eid prayers.

At the first sight of the new moon, Muslims have their first daytime meal after a month of fasting. In Ramzan, the 9th month of Islamic calendar, Muslims observe fast and abstain from food and water from dawn to dusk.

Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has announced that Eidul Fitr will be celebrated on Saturday (tomorrow) across Pakistan because Shawal moon of 1439AH was not sighted on Thursday.

King Salman also thanked Allah for having helped Saudi Arabia "remain adherent to Islamic Shariah law". If, however, the crescent is not sighted that day, then, Saturday, 16th June, 2018 automatically becomes the first day of Shawwal, 1439 AH and the day of 'idul fitr.

The Sultan urged the Muslim Ummah to sustain fervent prayers for the nation led by Muhammadu Buhari, other leaders, as well as for sustainable peace and unity in Nigeria and beyond.
