Another record! Second World Cup's quickest red card

James Rodriguez in action for Colombia

In Jose Perkerman, Colombia has an experienced tactician who is no stranger to managing at the World Cup having let his native Argentina in 2010 and Colombia to their best ever finish in 2014.

The 2-1 victory over Colombia on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ Time) was another surprising result in an unpredictable tournament.

But it it didn't hinder the game from immediate fireworks as the first red card of Russian Federation 2018 was in the third minute when midfielder Carlos Sanchez produced a professional foul.

Japan opened the score at 6 minutes with Shinji Kagawa from the penalty spot.

Yuya Osako won a bouncing ball to begin a sequence that led to the red card and the penalty. Kagawa then converted from the spot.

Battling for every ball, Colombia captain Radamel Falcao earned the free-kick from which Juan Quintero equalised before half-time.

Carlos Sanchez was dismissed for handball as Japan won the penalty from which Shinji Kagawa gave them the lead and, although Juan Quintero levelled, Yuya Osako headed the victor after the break.

"He played well in Germany this season", Honda said of the Werder Bremen forward.

None of Colombia's 19 games at the World Cup have ended goalless.

Japan looked threatening on the counter during the rest of the first half, as the South Americans struggled to deal with playing a man down in midfield and failed to track back to defend.

Carlos Sanchez was sent off just three minutes into Colombia's World Cup match against Japan, drawing comparisons to Luis Suarez after a deliberate handball.

After Quintero slotted home a clever free-kick against the above 'keeper Kawashima, it resulted in more free-kicks being scored in this World Cup than in the entire Brazil tournament four years ago. "We need to be strong, have character and show the power of our team".

Kagawa went close in the 16th minute but his shot rolled past the post and Osako fired against the face of goal from a unsafe position in the box.

Osako with the all-important goal for Japan...

Not a bad way to provide joy to a country recovering from a deadly quake in Osaka a day earlier. Japanese princess Takamado attended the match.

Japan also felt Rodriguez's wrath in that World Cup, as he inspired Colombia to a 4-1 win in the group stages after entering the game as a substitute.

Shinji Okazaki also was named on the bench after a calf complaint but Shinji Kagawa was handed a start.

Ospina did well to keep out a curling effort from Inui at full stretch three minutes before the hour mark, while Hiroki Sakai had a low shot desperately blocked in the 73rd minute after good hold-up play from Osako.

After profiting from Colombia's early setback, Nishino stressed to his players the importance of keeping up the pressure on the tiring opposition.

Tipped to finish bottom of the group, Japan have now made a blistering start to their World Cup campaign and could reach the Round of 16 for a third time in their history if they build on the momentum from today. There was little but no choice for referee Damir Skomina to send the defender off.
