Merkel seeks European Union migrant talks as German coalition crisis looms -paper

A reversal of her 2015 open-door migrant policy would be a huge blow to Merkel's authority

The decision sparked some opposition, most recently in the form of Interior Minister Horst Seehofer's open challenge to the policy, and a public poll showing 62 percent of Germans want to turn away asylum-seekers at the border.

Germany's interior minister is insisting that his party has no intention of bringing down Chancellor Angela Merkel and her government, but there's no sign yet of a compromise in a bitter standoff over migration.

Macron echoed her words: "We believe in a European answer to the challenges that migration poses for us", he said, adding that for him all 28 member states had to be involved, according to dpa. Under fire over the inhumane treatment of immigrant children at the USA border, Trump is telling his supporters that an overly harsh treatment of illegal immigrants is surely better than the chaos Angela Merkel's open-door policy has created.

"We're seeing small, positive developments, and we must of course continue to do more on the fight against crime", she said.

Seehofer has been one of the fiercest critics of Merkel's liberal stance.

The Bavarians have threatened to defy Merkel and on Monday go ahead with plans which she has sought to block.

During a press briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was confronted about the disconnect between Trump's tweet and reality. "Member States should take all necessary internal legislative and administrative measures to counter such movements and to closely cooperate amongst each other to this end", the text said in an indirect response to German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer.

The rules require migrants to apply for asylum in the first country they enter - a policy France has used to defend its own efforts to keep people from trying to cross over from Italy. She has bought herself some time but has two-week deadline to find a European solution or face the dissolution of the coalition government.

And it may also break apart a long-lasting alliance between Germany's two Christian sister parties, the CDU, led by Mrs Merkel, and its Bavarian counterpart, Mr Seehofer's CSU.

In an extraordinary move, the CSU - facing a tough regional election in October - has threatened to defy her and on Monday go ahead with plans for Germany to send back migrants already registered in other European Union states.

The Bavarian governor said that he would welcome a "truly effective European regulation" but warned against delaying the matter with a superficial and non-binding resolution at the June EU summit.

But Merkel also underlined that this initiative should be linked as closely as possible with the EU's ongoing defense initiative PESCO.

The Bavarian party wants to tighten rules governing the entry into Germany of migrants who are first registered in another European Union country and those rejected for asylum.

Merkel accepted the deadline and said she will attempt to solidify a deal by the European Union summit later this month, and report to her party by July 1.
