Saudi Arabia says new Yemen missile intercepted

Malaysia's military involvement in Saudi-led war in Yemen must end - Lawyers for Liberty

Yemeni government forces backed by Saudi-led coalition warplanes said they seized control of Hodeidah airport from Houthi rebels on Tuesday, a major objective in their fight to recapture the western city that is the country's aid and food lifeline.

Yemen pro-government forces are planning to isolate Houthi fighters in Hodeidah from other rebel-held areas by cutting off their main supply route, almost one week into an offensive to recapture the vital port city.

After almost a month of sporadic clashes between Houthi forces and the coalition, coupled with Hadi's militia, in the volatile province of Hudaydah, the latter two launched a major offensive on June 13 to take the Houthi-held Hudaydah, a densely-populated city and the war-torn country's most vital port, which is the entry point for 70 percent of the impoverished country's imports.

Meanwhile, Saudi-owned Al Arabia television reported that the coalition forces captured the airport.

Some 10,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the conflict.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other allies intervened in Yemen in March 2015 to push back the rebels and restore the internationally recognised government to power after the Houthis ousted it from swathes of the country including the capital Sanaa.

Hodeidah port remained open on Tuesday with the UN World Food Programme racing to unload three ships containing enough food for six million people for one month, WFP spokeswoman Bettina Luescher told reporters in Geneva. Houthi officials in Sanaa could not immediately be reached for comment. "It took them longer than anticipated, but that also translated to a high cost for the Houthis", said Peter Salisbury, a senior fellow at Chatham House's Middle East & North Africa Program.

"Coalition's aid shipments have frequently been confiscated by militias and found their way to the black market but this has not derailed the coalition commitment to alleviate the humanitarian crisis", he said.

The Houthis, who rule Yemen's capital and most of the populated areas in the unstable nation of 30 million people, deny the Arab states' assertions they are puppets of Iran.

On Sunday, it said a Houthi missile targeted the southern city of Jizan, leaving a Pakistani national wounded.

Capturing Hodeidah would give the coalition of mostly Gulf states a victory in the battle for the city.

Emirati forces are leading ground forces mixed with their own troops, irregular militiamen and soldiers backing Yemen's exiled government.

Most of these missiles were intercepted by Saudi air forces, but a few fell into residential areas and caused casualties and damage.
