Donald Trump declares North Korea 'extraordinary threat'

North Korea has returned remains of 200 US war dead, claims Trump

Pompeo said United States allies and North Korea's neighbour and ally China were supportive of the United States policy of maintaining sanctions on Pyongyang until its denuclearisation was complete. The move of relaxing sanctions is particularly expected in the fields of aviation and tourism. Kim first needed to express appreciation to Xi for China's help with the Singapore summit, including the provision of special airplanes for Kim and his entourage.

The inauguration of the Pyongyang-Xian route, the North's flag carrier will facilitate Air Koryo to fly to five Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shenyang, Shanghai and Chengdu.

About 100 wooden transport cases are being sent to the Demilitarized Zone, starting Saturday, to prepare for receiving US troop remains from North Korea, a representative for US Forces Korea said.

USA officials have said earlier that the remains are believed to be some or all of the more than 200 that the North Koreans have had for some time.

US and South Korean forces have been training together for years, and routinely rehearse everything from beach landings to an invasion from the North, or even "decapitation" strikes targeting the North Korean regime.

Regarding suspension of the exercises, South Korea's Defence Ministry said, "South Korea and the US made a decision to delay two of KMEP (drills) indefinitely, which was going to take place within the next three months".

The decision followed a meeting between Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joe Dunford, and National Security Advisor John Bolton. He said plans for the repatriation were "still preliminary".

An official declaration, contained in a notice to Congress, came on Friday despite Trump's assertion this month that his June 12 historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ended Pyongyang's nuclear weapons threat, reports The Washington Post. The drills help keep US forces at a state of readiness in one of the world's most tense flashpoints. "I wouldn't expect that at this point", he told reporters.

At a news conference after the meeting with Kim in Singapore, Trump announced that he would halt what he called "very provocative" and expensive regular military exercises that the United States holds with South Korea.

Abraham Denmark of the Wilson Center warned a congressional hearing: "Considering North Korea's repeated history of violating past agreements, there is little reason to trust them this time".

For Xi, having Kim under his wing could increase leverage in his dealings with Trump amid the escalating trade war between the U.S. and China.

From 1996 to 2005, joint U.S. China does not wish to fight a trade war but is not scared of one.
