Nintendo and Microsoft buddy-up to shame Sony over cross-play block

Nintendo invites Xbox to play and be

Fortnite came to Nintendo Switch earlier this month - and Sony locked out any account that had played on PS4 from even logging in on the portable console. "Better together." This was a trailer, as well, for the new Minecraft version available for Nintendo Switch.

For now, Sony remains elusive about its plans for cross-play - if it has any at all.

On Tuesday, Sony, which is about to hit the fifth anniversary of its latest device "PlayStation 4", announced that the company is planning to cut the cost of some of its best-selling games.

Check out the trailer for yourself below! Switch may well play host to many types of homebrew software in the future, but it seems Nintendo has found a way to stop the sort of unauthorised use that, for the console's health, really matters.

Crossplay between the big three home gaming consoles has been a point of contention for a while, ramping up when users spotted PS4 and Xbox One players playing together in Fortnite a year ago. Nintendo has worked around this with new anti-piracy measures, which are apparently able to "perfectly detect" whether a digital copy of a game has been legitimately obtained from the eShop or not.

Nintendo (OTCMKTS:NTDOY) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) have seen their game console fortunes taking opposite trajectories.

However, players on other platforms at the time being look to not have the opportunity to acquire the Royale Bomber skin that is included in the PS4 bundle. The PS4 console maker has remained firmly against allowing the feature, not only in Minecraft but also the likes of Rocket League and Fortnite. And, at one point in 2017, "Fortnite" briefly supported cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players before it was turned off (Epic Games said it was a bug). It's not clear whether this will be specific to Minecraft, or will be rolled out for other games going forward, but it's clearly a stand nonetheless. Looking at the 5-year trend, both Sony and Microsoft had down years.
