Houston Rockets star James Harden named NBA's MVP

Houston Rockets guard James Harden beat out Le Bron James for 2017-18 NBA MVP

Harden becomes the third ever Rocket to claim the award following Moses Malone (1979 and 1982) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1994).

Harden is the second player in league history to win the Sixth Man of the Year and MVP at some point in his career, joining Bill Walton. He is the first Rocket to lead the National Basketball Association in points per game in a season, and the second player in franchise history to average 30-plus in a season (Moses Malone - 31.1 in 1981-82).

Davis was also a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year - which was won by Utah Jazz forward Rudy Gobert - but the Pelicans forward was the only player to be named as a finalist for two of the major awards handed out Monday night.

Meanwhile, Australian Ben Simmons - of the Philadelphia 76ers - has won Rookie of the Year honours at the NBA Awards.

Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum is the other finalist for the Rookie of the Year award and notably did better than both Simmons and Mitchell in the postseason as he thrived in the absence of Kyrie Irving to take the Cavaliers the distance in the Eastern Conference Finals, albeit in a losing effort.

He led the league in scoring, 3-pointers and 50-point games with four while helping the Rockets to an NBA-leading 65 wins.

Curry himself received a few fourth and fifth place MVP votes, finishing 10th in voting despite missing 31 games this season.

Los Angeles Clippers guard Lou Williams is now a two-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award victor after being named the league's best bench player for the 2017-18 campaign.

"I want to thank the Clippers organization for giving me an opportunity to be myself", Williams said. He was hired as the new coach of the Detroit Pistons, replacing Stan Van Gundy. Usually, the knock on Harden was his defense, but in the switching scheme the Rockets employed all season he held his own.

Therefore, there's a lot riding on the MVP award every year. A former NBA MVP and 12-time All-Star, Robertson averaged 25.7 points, 9.5 assists and 7.5 rebounds over 14 NBA seasons between the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks.
