North Korea Cancels Anti-US Demonstration

North Korea erasing most anti-US propaganda

North Korea will cancel its annual "anti-US imperialism" rally, part of a growing detente with its longstanding enemy as the two countries negotiate over the fate of the North's nuclear weapons program.

Lee Nak-yeon, speaking at a ceremony in Seoul commemorating the 68th anniversary of the 1950-53 Korean War, was addressing reports last week that suggested the issue of North Korean artillery was raised at inter-Korea talks at Panmunjom.

North Korea chose to call off its annual "anti-US imperialism" rally for this year, according to a report from The Associated Press.

Singapore, an affluent financial hub, was seen as a good choice for the summit due to its warm ties with both the United States and North Korea, and reputation for strict order.

China will nearly certainly wish to reward North Korea with immediate sanctions relief if progress on denuclearization is made, so it will be important to ensure China understands and agrees with the timetable presented to Pyongyang.

"There will be specific asks and there will be a specific timeline when we present the North Koreans with our concept of what implementation of the summit agreement looks like".

The Pentagon says Pyongyang has indicated several times that they have as many as 200 sets of remains that could be those of United States soldiers who died in the war.

Pompeo, who has been charged with leading negotiations aimed at persuading North Korea to give up a nuclear weapons program that threatens the USA, said he would "constantly reassess" whether enough progress was being made to continue talks.

"We hope that we will have an ongoing process of making progress", Pompeo said Sunday.

And Trump said last week the "number-one statement" in the document he and Kim signed in Singapore was "we will immediately begin total denuclearization of North Korea", although there was no such statement in the text.

The North's agreement to hold only a single week of reunions for 100 families, falls far short of what many expected after Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in promised "comprehensive and groundbreaking advancement of inter-Korean relations" in their joint declaration at the end of the inter-Korean summit in April.

Pompeo said a week ago he would likely travel back to North Korea "before too terribly long" to try to flesh out commitments made at the summit.
