Prince William kicks off busy day in Israel at Holocaust memorial

Prince William watches England thrash Panama in replay

Prince William arrived in Israel on Monday for the first-ever official visit of a member of the British royal family to the tumultuous region London once ruled.

The Duke of Cambridge's jet touched down at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv last night following William's packed two days in Jordan. Israel considers the city, home to holy sites sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, as an inseparable part of its capital. It's a high-profile foreign trip for William, second in line to the throne, and comes at a time of widening rifts between Israelis and Palestinians.

William, who flew into Israel from Jordan, will also visit the Church of St. Mary Magdalene and the tomb of his great-grandmother, Princess Alice, who sheltered a Jewish family in Greece during World War Two.

On Wednesday, the duke will visit Ramallah in the occupied West Bank and will meet the Palestinian president.

The prince arrived from Jordan, where he kicked off his five-day Middle East tour by meeting young scientists, refugees and political leaders.

Tomorrow, he will lay a wreath at Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem, before meeting separately with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin.

"It is important to emphasis that the Duke is not a political figure, this is not a political visit", he said.

Britain captured Palestine from the Ottoman empire in 1917 during World War One and administered the territory under global mandate until 1948, pulling out a day before Israel declared independence. According to Hello! during a reception at the British ambassador to Jordan's residence in the capital of Amman, Rania Malki, chief executive of Save The Children in Jordan, told Prince William that she knew the house that the Middleton family had lived in, as it's now the home of her children's paediatrician.

Their Royal Highnesses were also briefed on Makani services with the Royal Hashemite Court explaining that they provide "vulnerable children and youth with learning opportunities, life skills training and psychosocial support services".

The children greeted the William and the Jordanian crown prince in the amphitheatre of Jerash, where they showed off some of their art work, including paintings.

William was reportedly disappointed to miss the England v Panama game on Sunday afternoon as he was travelling to Jordan.
