Serbia 0 - 2 Brazil - Match Report & Highlights

Serbia to face the might of Brazil in Group E match

Brazil are through to the knockout stages of the World Cup after a goal in each half from Paulinho and Thiago Silva gave them a victory over Serbia that ensured they progressed from Group E in first place.

The world's most expensive player scored the second goal in the 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in Saint Petersburg that edged Tite's side closer to qualifying for the last 16.

Neymar is likely to start for Brazil in a mostly unchanged lineup against Serbia on Wednesday at the World Cup.

Paulinho made up for Brazil's faulty finishing in the 36th minute - the marauding midfielder latching onto a perfectly-lobbed Philippe Coutinho pass before poking past a charging Stojkovic and giving Brazil an earned advantage.

That assist was a frustrated Neymar's major contribution as he fired one shot at Stojkovic's legs after a 70-metre counter-attack, bounced another over the bar and saw the keeper palm clear his final effort of a night where he was routinely bullied off the ball and lost possession countless times.

More news: Coutinho, Neymar strike late to guide Brazil past Costa Rica

Following Switzerland's draw to Costa Rica, Serbia finish the campaign in third spot. Coutinho once again came through for Brazil as he put the victor home in the 91st minute while Neymar sealed the match off with one of his own in the 97th.

Neymar wasn't far away from doubling their lead on the stroke of half-time with a curling shot from 20 yards out that dipped just over the goal, after combining with Luis on the left.

This will be the second meeting between Serbia and Brazil with the former as an independent nation - their first encounter was in a friendly in June 2014, Brazil winning 1-0.

They had yet to click in their earlier games, where they limply drew 1-1 with Switzerland and needed two stoppage-time goals to beat Costa Rica, and they didn't exactly sparkle in the first half-hour on Wednesday.

Sure enough, Brazil regrouped and found the second when Thiago Silva headed in at the front post from a corner on 68 minutes - despite protestations from Serbia that Miranda had maneuvered Mitrovic out of the way in the build-up.
