Capitol Police charge almost 600 people protesting Trump immigration policies

Protesters arrested during #WomenDisobey demonstration at Senate office building

Jayapal was issued a $50 fine for "crowding, obstructing, or incommoding".

She and other protesters were charged with unlawful demonstration, a charge that includes crowding or obstructing others in a public place.

The groups are asking march attendees to wear white as a "striking visual symbol" to bring participants together and "channel historic social justice movements unified by one color of clothing", the FAQ says. The women sat in the building in protest of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' "zero tolerance" policy that maintains a hard line on illegal border crossings.

Winnie Wong, political adviser for the Women's March, said the crowd's fervor would translate into "the energy we will need to see to at the ballot box in November", when congressional control will be at stake.

A Democratic congresswoman was among about 575 people arrested at a rally protesting the Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy on immigration.

"I'm proud to have been arrested with them, to put myself in the camp of people who believe that the United States of America is better", Jayapal, a Washington Democrat, said in a video posted on Twitter after her arrest. Trump reversed that policy last week, through protest organizers said they plan to go on with the events nationwide in a unified rebuke of the administration's treatment of immigrants.

President Trump is spending the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., and won't be home during the protest.

The policy led to intense criticism in the United States and overseas, and Trump signed an executive order that would let children stay with their parents as they moved through the legal system, drawing renewed criticism.

Several prominent members of Congress, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren of MA joined in solidarity with the protesters.

Ana Maria Archila, executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy, said calling for the disbandment of ICE "would have seemed absurd even a few months ago".

"I met with all 174 of the women that were there, and it was absolutely heartbreaking to hear their stories, to hear about how their children had been taken away".

Demonstrators are also asked to bring their friends and a sign with a messages expressing support for the reunification of separated families, bearing messages like, "Keep Families Together" or "Familias Unidas No Divididas".

Larger protests are being planned for Saturday in Washington, D.C., and cities around the country under the banner of #FamiliesBelongTogether.
