Mexico fans celebrate South Korea's victory over Germany with impromptu parades

Sweden's supporters outside Fisht Stadium after the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group F football match between Germany and Sweden

German soccer fans had their hopes of a fifth World Cup title dashed on Wednesday after watching their team crash out of the tournament in the opening round for the first time in 80 years.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio was apologetic, his players were defiant and their critics baffled after they reached the last 16 of the World Cup despite a 3-0 defeat to Sweden. They didn't do that once in this World Cup which caused them real problems.

When the match ended with Heung-Min Son tapping the ball into an open goal off a counterattack in the 90+6' minute, the ecstatic mob found a random Korean outside the stadium and hoised him up - even though he was cheering for Sweden.

'I think first of all we need to congratulate our two opponents who have made it out of the group. "I wasn't happy with the way we defended but that's a learning curve for me".

With all this taken into account, the mood in Mexico, a nation who has a proud, if unspectacular, record at the World Cup, was one of giddy relief mixed with ecstasy.

Germany, who won the tournment with some breath-taking displays in 2014, kicked off their Russian Federation campaign by losing 1-0 to Mexico.

Khedira was recalled to the team against South Korea after being dropped for the narrow win over Sweden, but produced another ineffective performance.

Shock loss: Germany's Julian Brandt, left, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, and Joshua Kimmich. "Maybe we have to change some parts of the team and start again and some players should not get another call up, because they are past their best", Basler said. "For us, the thing is to know Mexico inside out so we can outline our expectations".

But Mexico City exploded with joy when South Korea scored two injury-time goals to eliminate the defending world champions in a huge upset.

The 2018 World Cup tournament has had a lot of drama already, but the holders Germany going out in the group stages is the biggest story yet. "There was no leader on the pitch to take responsibility", the former midfielder said.

The 2014 champions suffered the heartbreak of first round elimination at the World Cup finals for the first time since 1938 in the process.
