Oldest living WWII vet's bank account emptied by thieves

Thieves drain bank account of oldest US veteran

The family of 112-year-old Richard Overton said they don't know how a thief got Overton's Social Security and personal checking account numbers.

Richard Overton, 112-years-old, the 3rd oldest man on the planet, the oldest male in the United States, and the oldest military veteran.

Cousin Volma Overton declined to say how much was stolen but said it was a "significant amount of money". Family members recently learned that an unidentified thief used Overton's identity to buy savings bonds through the government's TreasuryDirect site over a couple of months. He's also contacted Treasury Direct and reported the theft to the Austin Police Department.

Fortunately for Overton a GoFundMe account that was created to help pay for his care is still taking care of him for the time being.

The supercentenarian is known for his love of Tampa Sweet cigars (he says he never inhales the smoke), whiskey, coffee and Dr. Pepper. The family says the money from that page is linked to a separate bank account. The page was set-up in December 2016 and has since raised more than $320,000, according to the report. "And we looked at each other and like 'Saving's bonds?' Knowing that we had nothing to with that or Richard had nothing to do with that, but somebody else did", said Olma Overton, cousin.

'My mind goes up and down the gamut from A to Z of who it could be, but it could be someone in a foreign country, ' he said. Austin police are working closely with the Overton family to try to track down the culprit.
