Two-thirds of Americans oppose reversing Roe vs. Wade

In Supreme Court pick, Trump can push conservative social agenda

"I've got it down to about five" candidates, including two women, Trump told reporters on Air Force One as he traveled to his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. He indicated that he may interview one or two candidates there this weekend. "From day one, I've heard, outside of war and peace of course, the most important decision you make is the selection of a Supreme Court judge - if you get it".

They include judges Amy Coney Barrett, 46, the most talked-about woman on the list; Thomas Hardiman, 52, the runner-up to Gorsuch past year; Raymond Kethledge, 51, another former Kennedy clerk; and Amul Thapar, 49, a favorite of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

The president originally said he was considering a list of 25 candidates.

Prominent on the list of possible successors are Judges Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, who was seriously considered for the seat eventually filled by Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh, who serves on the federal appeals court in Washington and is a former Kennedy law clerk.

Trump told reporters Friday he would not ask potential nominees their views on abortion rights and Roe v. Wade.

The Republican game plan for selecting the next member of the Supreme Court was ready to go even before longtime Justice Anthony Kennedy made his retirement announcement this week.

Henne, however, said Democratic anger would only intensify during and after the nomination battle, which is likely to consume Washington for months and thrust the court's ideological makeup into the forefront of voters' minds.

The network announced Friday that Bartiromo and Trump would also "discuss the current state of the United States economy, global trade sanctions, immigration, and more".

White House Counsel Don McGahn will be Trump's lead adviser on the pick, having successfully guided the nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch through the selection and confirmation process previous year, White House sources said.

"I think sometimes we talk about Supreme Court too much in abstractions, about dignity and who is qualified and who is not".

A key part of the vetting process will likely be reviewing the judge's history of written opinions, said a person with knowledge of Trump's thinking, who noted that the range of Gorsuch's past opinions impressed Trump. The White House said Trump's team also spoke with more than a dozen additional senators.

Past reports have identified five front-runners.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) said it was the end of the U.S. Constitution. "Usually, they don't say that".

"He's an outstanding talent", he said. "I love that issue if they're going to actually do that".

If Trump is able to appoint a crucial fifth anti-woman justice to the Supreme Court, the fate of safe abortions for millions of women across the country will be jeopardized.
