Trump's Lawyer Michael Cohen Calls Out Michael Avenatti As 'Small Town'

Porn star Stormy Daniels was supposed to meet with prosecutors last Monday in reference to the investigation into Cohen but the meeting was abruptly cancelled

A former federal prosecutor explained to Business Insider that it would be counter-productive for President Donald Trump to pardon his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen following the ABC News interview in which he broke his silence on the federal criminal investigation he's at the center of.

"My wife, my daughter and my son have my first loyalty and always will", Mr Cohen told George Stephanopoulos of ABC News in an off-camera interview that was reported on Good Morning America.

"I am not a villain of this story, and I will not allow others to try to depict me that way", he added.

The FBI seized documents and files as part of investigations by federal prosecutors in NY stemming in part from a referral by the USA special counsel's office looking into possible coordination between Trump 2016 campaign aides and Russian Federation.

Cohen's thoughts - and loyalties - could be central to the ongoing investigations into what Trump campaign officials and other Trump loyalists knew during the 2016 presidential election, and the motivations for some of their actions, including Cohen's controversial payment to a porn star who said she had a sexual encounter with Trump many years before he became president.

Stephanopoulos said that Cohen, who has not been charged in either probe, came across "as his own man" during the weekend interview and said he will "not be a punching bag" if Trump's team tries to discredit him as part of a legal strategy.

Cohen, in an interview with ABC, indicated he would be cooperative with prosecutors investigating his business dealings and probes into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election.

The FBI raided his home and office in April on a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller, who is looking into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow.

"To be crystal clear, my wife, my daughter and my son, and this country have my first loyalty", Michael Cohen told ABC News in an interview broadcast on Monday.

Cohen gave the interview shortly after hiring former federal prosecutor Guy Petrillo as his new attorney - bringing to an end an arrangement between his lawyers and Trump's in which the two legal teams shared information. "If they want information on Trump, he's willing to give it".

"When they searched my hotel room and my home, it was obviously upsetting to me and my family", Cohen said.

Unlike his former boss, who lashed out at the Federal Bureau of Investigation for swooping down on Cohen's home, hotel suite and office in April, tweeting "a total witch hunt" in capital letters and "attorney-client privilege is dead!", Cohen heaped unlikely praise on the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents for being "respectful, courteous and professional" as they were searching his property.

I don't minimize the general amusement factor inherent in how nervous Cohen's interview might make certain people who deserve to be made as nervous as possible. "Sorry, I don't see Michael doing that despite the awful Witch Hunt and the dishonest media!" "One day I will answer", Cohen told Stephanopoulos on Saturday.

Cohen was asked if he was considering cooperating with prosecutors in their probe. "But for now, I can't comment further on advice of my counsel". I don't want him to shut up, but I'll reserve judgment until he puts up. Cohen's comments that Stormy Daniels' lawyer is small potatoes simply isn't true. "I respect the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an institution, as well as their agents", Cohen said.

"Most people will flip if the government lets them out of trouble, even if it means lying or making up stories", Trump said in a April tweet.
