President Trump Names New Supreme Court Justice

Trump weighs top picks for Supreme Court amid last-minute maneuvering

All are conservative jurists in the mold of Trump's previous Supreme Court pick, Gorsuch.

Prior to his time as a judge he oversaw an investigation into the death of a deputy counsel for President Bill Clinton. Kavanaugh also did preliminary work that led to Clinton's impeachment for an affair with a White House intern. He is probably best known for his ties to President George W. Bush. After that he became a staff secretary for Bush, often traveling with the president.

She said the group isn't talking yet about returning to those roots but is grimly discussing a near future in which women in much of the country might have great difficulty obtaining safe abortions.

Kavanaugh, whose wife and two daughters were with him Monday night, said he was "deeply humbled" by the nomination.

Kavanaugh avoided any direct reference to specific issues in front of the court in his remarks in the East Room, but said that he will be visiting Capitol Hill Tuesday to assure senators that he will commit to "keep an open mind in every case". "I think these are judges who have been vetted, they've received votes, they've received, in many cases, bipartisan support". The favorite of White House Counsel Donald McGahn, Kavanaugh is also considered a safer pick than some of the more partisan choices who were on the president's shortlist.

Mr Trump is securing a conservative judiciary for a generation. Republican Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri told NBC's "Meet The Press" the president should take note of that political reality in his choice.

Others, however, perceived time was of the essence.

The Democratic senator Kamala Harris of California said: "Judge Brett Kavanaugh represents a direct and fundamental threat to that promise of equality and so I will oppose his nomination to the supreme court".

The announcement was set to spark an intense fight between Republicans and Democrats during the ensuing confirmation process in the US Senate.

If the Senate confirms Trump's nominee, we will be stuck with a Court that sides with big corporations over the American people.

Trump previous year appointed Neil Gorsuch, who has already become one of the most conservative justices, after Senate Republicans in 2016 refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy left by the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

"Sen. Heitkamp was invited but isn't able to attend tonight", her spokesperson said in a statement. I think they'd be fine justices of the Supreme Court.

Hardiman could also have one important advocate.

But that doesn't mean Hardiman is out of the mix.

Kennedy, who is 81, had been nominated for the court by President Ronald Reagan in 1987.

"We have ample examples from the past several years of judges who have sworn in their confirmation hearings to respect precedent, and then reverse their stand once on the court", Schumer said on the Senate floor Monday, arguing that Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Neil Gorsuch violated the precedents they said they would adhere to. "Laws can be changed, regulations can be wiped away, but these federal judicial appointments are lifetime". They were all on a list of 25 names that were vetted by the conservative groups Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation.

Trump prefaced the reveal with a brief address, saying that like President Reagan before him, he was looking for "judges who apply the Constitution as written".
