Kerber to face Ostapenko in Wimbledon semifinal

Bertens storms through to Wimbledon quarter-finals against Pliskova

Serena Williams, who lost a set for the first time at this year's Wimbledon, came back to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-4.

World No 52 Giorgi, in her first Grand Slam quarter-final, was Williams' highest-ranked opponent of Wimbledon so far and provided a stern test but ultimately fell short.

Ominiously for the other seven women left in the draw, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, who missed Wimbledon a year ago but won the title on her previous two visits, insists there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Williams responded by raising the intensity level and began striking the ball with ferocious power to break Giorgi's serve for the first time on her way to levelling the match.

She gave birth to daughter Olympia in September. Serena Williams will be there, though, after she moved a step closer to an eighth title at the All England Club. I mean, I always say I plan on it, I would like to be there, have these goals. Williams is 3-0 against Giorgi in the singles format.

Williams, however, lifted her intensity in the second set, avoiding any break points as she secured one break of her own. "I feel like I'm back, but I still have a long way to go to get to where I was".

Rapper friend Drake and fellow singer Justin Timberlake were among those rooting for her on Centre Court.

Evgeniya Rodina, another mother beaten by Williams yesterday, 6-2, 6-2, did the decent thing and said the American was her idol. Williams, herself, responded with a smile.

"At the French Open I had all that pressure, now it's gone", former junior Wimbledon champion Ostapenko said.

Ostapenko became the first Latvian woman to make the last four at the All England Club with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Dominika Cibulkova on a windy No. 1 Court. That top seeds from the women's side happened now shows that the field is quite even, maybe as well, regardless of who is 1, 2, 3, and 4. "I feel good. I feel like I did better today, I had to".
